지식의 한계는 모든 사람들에게는 가치있는 활동을 줄 수 있는 매개체라 생각합니다. 즉 지식의 한계를 극복하기 위해서 사전을 통해서, 책을 통해서 한계를 극복하고 있습니다. 어떻게 보면 당연한 듯 하면서도 부적절한 표현이겠지만, 최근들어 검색을 통해서 Social Bookmark나 Social Networking을 통해서 지식의 폭을 점점 좁혀가고 있는 모습은 자연스럽게 되어버렸습니다.

Google이 영문판 Scholar 검색에 이어 한국어판 Scholar Search를 시작했습니다.

"거인의 어깨에 올라서서 더 넓은 세상을 바라보다 - 아이작 뉴턴"의 명언을 인용하여 Scholar site 앞장을 장식하는 깊이 있는 표현은 Google이 지향하는 정보 공유와 정보의 깊이를 더욱 가치있게 해주고 싶은 의지가 아니었을까 합니다.

우리가 아는 아이작 뉴턴이 이명언은 지식의 깊이를 위해서는 수많은 선조격 문언들과 문서들, 책을 응용하고 탐구하라는 뜻 깊은 표현이 아닐까 합니다.

그렇다면 "거인의 어깨에 올라서서 더 넓은 세상을 바라보다" 라는 이 명원의 기원은 어디일까요?

잠시 Newton이 말한 배경을 살펴보면 아래와 같습니다.

The best-known use of this phrase was by Isaac Newton in a letter to his rival Robert Hooke, in 1676:

"What Descartes did was a good step. You have added much several ways, and especially in taking the colours of thin plates into philosophical consideration. If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."

Newton didn't originate it though. The 12th century theologian and author John of Salisbury used a version of the phrase in a treatise on logic called Metalogicon, written in Latin in 1159. Translations of this difficult book are quite variable but the gist of what Salisbury said is:

"We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants. We see more, and things that are more distant, than they did, not because our sight is superior or because we are taller than they, but because they raise us up, and by their great stature add to ours."

The phrase may even pre-date John of Salisbury, who was known to have adapted and refined the work of others.

예전의 결과물은 현 시대의 과정 단계에 많은 도움을 주고 있습니다. 귀중한 제안서를 작성하더라고, 이전의 통계치 및 학술 자료를 인용함에 있어 깊이 있는 지식을 잘 응용해야만 Material은 참된 빛을 볼 수 있을 것입니다. Newton이 새겨준 이 명언을 토대로 더욱 값진 결과물이 나올 수 있도록 Study해야 함을 잊지 말자구요.
