구글, 인텔과 함께 에너지 효율화 프로그램 프로젝트 시행

Google, Intel launch energy efficiency program

구글이 인텔과 함께 에너지 효율화 프로그램, "Climate Savers Computing Initiative"을 함께 한다.  프로세스를 만드는 기업 인텔과 전세계 검색 서비스 1위 업체 구글이 만나는 이번 프로그램은 그야말로 PC의 에너지 saving을 앞장서는 큰 캠페인이 아닐까 예상된다고 로이터 통신이 발표했다.

델 컴퓨터, HP, IBM, 레노버 그룹, MS와 미국 환경 보호 협회와 25개 이상의 환경 그룹-기업, 관련 대학의 에너지절약 캠페인 및 연구기관과의 큰 프로젝트다.

이 프로그램은 컴퓨터와 소프트웨어간의 에너지 소비 관리 프로그램에 대한 새로운 모델을 만드는 것인데, 이것은 이미 지구 온난화에 대한 실리콘 밸리의 기업내 Clean Technology 일환으로 예전부터 추진되어 왔었고 이에 대한 역할 분담을 어느정도 규정지었던 것으로 나타난다.

Called the "Climate Savers Computing Initiative," the new program has signed on computer makers Dell Inc. (DELL.O: Quote, Profile, Research), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ.N: Quote, Profile, Research), IBM (IBM.N: Quote, Profile, Research), Lenovo Group Ltd. (0992.HK: Quote, Profile, Research), software maker Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and more than 25 environmental groups, companies and universities for the energy savings campaign.

The program will set new efficiency goals for computers and software tools that manage power consumption.

It comes at a time when Silicon Valley has made clean technology a priority as it seeks to play a greater role in reducing the harmful effects of climate change attributed to global warming.

어떻게 보면 당연하게 했었어야 하는 것을 구글과 인텔이 앞장서서 하드웨어와 소프트웨어 업체들과 손을 잡고 Clean Technology를 실현하고자 하는 뜻을 장기적인 안목에서 추진하는 것일 수도 있다. 구글이 벌어들인 수익을 다시 사회로 환원하고자 하는 Green Campaign의 역할도 여기서 그대로 나타날 수 있는 큰 이슈가 아닐지?

Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have thrown capital behind numerous environmentally friendly ventures, including the installation of one of the largest solar energy systems to power their sprawling headquarters.

The program requires a 90 percent efficiency standard for power supplies, said Urs Holzle, senior vice president of operations at Google.

More efficient computing could trim the use of electricity that now is being wasted as heat, which in turn, especially in large server centers, requires more power for air conditioning.
