워너의 Blu-ray 사업 자극, HD-DVD & Video Format에 기름 붓나

미국 굴지의 영상 사업을 진행하고 있는 워너브라더스가 Blu-ray를 이용한 high definition format 시장에 진출할 것이라는 루머가 2008 CES 현장에서 나와서 화제라고 합니다.

아직 루머에 불과하지만, 워너의 Blu-ray  시장 진입으로 기존 HD-DVD 시장의 몰락과 그에 따른 소비자의 구매의사와 경제 효과가 어떻게 진행될지 PC-World에서 잘 점치고 있었습니다.

The Hollywood business says it will continue producing movies in the two next-generation disc formats until May of this year, when it will use Blu-ray alone. Regular DVDs will still be sold alongside the HD format.

Abandoning HD DVD is a difficult decision but a "strategic" one based on a shifting balance of power between the two disc standards, Warner says. Since more customers are buying Blu-ray titles, choosing the one standard may help decisions at store shelves. Prices for movie players are said to be low enough that encouraging competition between the rival standards is no longer necessary.

이제는 DVD format과 Blu-ray의 두 세대 공존은 더이상 없을 것이라는 말을 하면서 한개의 Format으로 앞으로의 시장을 지배한다는 전략적인 사업 구상을 내 던지고 있는 것일 수도 있습니다.

아마도 현재의 DVD 시장보다 더욱 앞선 미래 구상을 하고 있을 수도 있지만, 라이벌 표준 포맷인 DVD와 Blu-ray가 공존하는 날이 얼마 되지 않아 한개의 시장으로 단일화 되는 날이 올 수도 있을 것이라는 시장 분석이 위의 두가지 기사 URL에서 발견할 수 있을 것입니다.

For some, the Warner decision marks the end of the format battle.

"I think the war is over. HD DVD has lost. It really is game-over for Toshiba and the other vendors," said Robin Harris, an analyst with Data Mobility Group. "The basic issue is not technology. It's about distribution, it's about marketing, it's about content and Blu-ray has been winning the content war for sometime. I don't know why [Toshiba] keeps pouring money into it, it's time to stop."

Harris credited Sony's inclusion of Blu-ray Disc in the PlayStation 3 with being one of the instrumental moves in winning the fight for Blu-ray Disc.

HD DVD는 전쟁에서 패배하고 Blu-ray가 앞으로의 시장 전세에서 최종 승리자가 되었다는 발언에서 Sony와 Warner와의 관계를 더욱 끈끈하게 하는 내용이 다분하다고 생각합니다. 어차피 Sony의 Playstation 3에서도 Blu-ray가 채택되면서 HD DVD의 자리는 점점 입지를 잃어가고 있는 형국이니 말입니다.
